Abortion-An Essential Service?

Published by emmydaniels at 6:14 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Recently there was a report in the news of an abortion doctor who was murdered in his church. I was especially saddened to hear about it, not because the crime was worse than any other murder, but because of the way it makes people who are against abortion look. It makes us look like fanatics; like hateful, murderous people. Any time an abortionist is murdered, many abortion advocates start pointing fingers at Christians in general. Some seem to think that all Christians, or other people who oppose the murder of unborn babies, would kill abortionists if we got the chance. It’s the same way that some people think that all Christians, or those who believe that homosexuality is against God’s law, would murder homosexuals if given the chance.

One thing that really struck me as I was reading about the murder of this doctor was a statement that called abortion an “essential service.” It makes abortion sound like a necessity, like an appendectomy or the removal of a tumor. When would it be “essential” to murder a baby? Essential to what? Essential to the mother’s convenience? Essential to prevent the hardship of having to raise a handicapped child? Essential to protect the mother’s reputation and career?

To me, it’s like saying that face-lifts, liposuction, or nose jobs are essential services. Only this is worse. To say that it is essential to end the life of a human beingĀ  is horrifying. Of course, then there is the argument of when the life of the mother is in danger. I have to wonder, though, how often that is really the case. Or in the case of rape or incest. I can’t imagine the horror of finding yourself pregnant with a child after enduring a rape. But I still don’t understand how abortion would be “essential” even in this case. How can giving birth to an innocent baby and giving that child to a loving couple be more traumatic than murdering that innocent child, and having to live with the guilt of what you have done all your life?

It scares me to think that there are people who believe that abortion is sometimes essential. I wonder how long down the road women will be forced to have abortions when their baby is found to have down syndrome or some other disorder. It is done in other countries: I just pray that God will be merciful to us and never allow our country fall that far.
